Why May is Called the Month of Mary 👑
May is dedicated to Mary because of her unique place in God’s plan and the Church’s ancient practice of honoring her with particular devotion during the spring season.
The Historical Roots
The formal dedication of May to Mary emerged gradually over centuries, though the practice of special Marian devotion in spring is ancient. By the medieval period, it became customary to honor Mary with particular solemnity during May. The practice was formalized and popularized in the 19th century through papal encouragement, especially as devotion to the Rosary and Marian spirituality flourished across the Catholic world. Today, the entire month is set aside as a liturgical celebration of her singular role in salvation history.
Why Spring Itself
Spring is the season of renewal, flowering, and new life, deeply fitting for Mary, the Mother of Life. She is the gate through which Christ entered the world, bringing salvation to all humanity. The blooming of May gardens mirrors the spiritual fruitfulness that flows from honoring Mary and seeking her intercession. This seasonal connection makes the entire month a natural time to contemplate her beauty, her yes to God, and her maternal care for the Church.
How Catholics Celebrate May
During May, parishes and families engage in traditional devotions:
- Praying the Rosary daily, often in groups
- Crowning Mary’s statue with flowers
- Attending May processions and special Marian liturgies
- Consecrating themselves to Mary, following St. Louis de Montfort’s spirituality
- Meditating on the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary, which focus on events in Mary’s life
Why It Matters
Mary is the New Eve, the Ark of the New Covenant, and the perfect model of faith and surrender. Honoring her during May isn’t an isolated practice—it flows from Scripture itself. Jesus gave His mother to the Church at the foot of the Cross (John 19:26–27). Devoting a month to her intercession strengthens the Church’s bond with Christ through His mother, drawing souls closer to Him.
